Sermon on dedication

Sermon on dedication

Scripture: Numbers Scripture: Numbers ; 53; ; 6; Matthew We have gathered here today to dedicate this building to God. God saw fit to allow us to occupy this place after we had met in schools for over eight years.

Today, having completed the work necessary to fully occupy this place, we can now dedicate this building and its functions to God. To dedicate something means you set it aside for use for a special purpose and today we will set aside this place as a house of God for worship and a place of refuge for those in need spiritually. Before we go through the formal service of dedicating this building, I want to lay the proper foundation for what we are dedicating this building for — as it relates to it being a place of refuge.

I do not think I need to elaborate on it being a place of worship. We recognize that the people of this congregation are the Church and this place where we come together weekly to worship God with other believers. But as a Church both as people and this special place that God has given us, we have another responsibility to reach out to those around us. Now that we have this place we must be attentive to what takes place in this house and how we use it in our service to God.

For example, in one of the cities where I used to live, there was one Church that used one of their fellowship halls as a Christian night club where people could get together and party — which is really what they did.

We will dedicate and treat this place as a house of God for worship of Him and a place of refuge for those seeking help. Please turn with me to Numbers chapter one and we will begin reading at verse forty-seven. In the first chapter of Numbers, God directed Moses to take a census of all of males of the twelve tribes of Israel over the age of twenty — these were men who could be used a warriors if needed.

The tribe of Levi was exempt from this census as they were not to be warriors. But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony. The tribe of Levi was appointed to a lifetime position as priests over Israel. They were not allowed to be warriors, but were assigned to keep the house of God. When the Children of Israel came into the Promised Land, the Levites were not given land as the other tribes, but were given cities.

These cities were placed strategically throughout the land. When you read verse fifty-three God said that the Levites would camp around the tabernacle so that His wrath would not be on the people of Israel. Here is what we need to understand. If anyone else came within a certain distance of it, they would be put to death.

So the tribe of Levi was to camp around the tabernacle to keep the people safe while also performing their duties as priests to keep the people focused on their one true God.

Now turn to chapter thirty-five. When these cities were given, they became cities of refuge, especially for those who had killed someone unintentionally. Now you would think that if someone accidently killed another person they would be fine since it was an accident but that was not the case.Protect your website with Sucuri!

What does it mean to dedicate a building, or a child or a home? Before we try and answer that question, it is helpful to get a little background on this temple that Solomon was dedicating.

It took seven years for King Solomon to actually build the temple. So this was a long-term project. Skilled workers were employed.

When all the work for the temple was finished, the last step was bringing the Ark of the Covenant and placing it in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, putting it beneath the wings of the cherubim. And when the priests withdrew from the Holy Place where they put the ark, the glory of the Lord filled the temple and all the people worshiped God.

Solomon then prayed two prayers of dedication. The first prayer is a longer prayer which is recorded for us in verses 1 Kings It is a beautiful prayer which relates more specifically to the temple itself and its unique place in the history of Israel and the world. But then Solomon goes on to pray this second prayer of dedication in verses This is a more general prayer of dedication and well-suited to the dedication of any home, building or business to the Lord.

There are four parts to this prayer, and all four are easily applicable to the dedication of our sanctuary to God and his glory today. Solomon begins his prayer with thanksgiving and praise for what God has done. Look at verses John ESV. Sermons on John Blessed Broken Given. God's Grace. Created for Significance.

Realized God has left it up to you to show them His way?

God has been asking us to put many things on His altar recently. There are many examples of parents in the Bible who brought their children to God and gave them back to Him:.

There is the classic example of Hannah bringing her son Samuel the son for whom she had prayedand presenting him to God, and handing young Samuel over to Eli the priest. I Sam. Of course, you remember Joseph and Mary brought the infant child Jesus to the temple following his circumcision at 8 days.

But the example of a parent surrendering his child to God that I want us to read about today is that of Abraham offering Isaac on Mt. Abraham literally, totally, irrevocably gave Isaac back to God. Manthat had to be hard and painful for Abraham. After all:. He was born when Sarah was 90 and Abraham was years of age. Do you know—the best thing Abraham ever did for Isaac was to tie him to that altar and to surrender him back to God? Isaac would have lived and died in obscurity—a nomad, and a nobody.

And so, you and I need to learn from Abraham today. It means 4 things:. He was demonstrating that his love and fear of God were supreme in his life above all else. Matthew You have the privilege to love and train this child. That little boy or girl does not really belong to you—they belong to God! They are a precious gift from God, on loan to you.

In 1 Samuel chapter 1 we find the story of a woman, a mother named Hannah. There are some important things that Hannah, a godly mother teaches us. This ordinary woman is an example of a great woman and a godly mother in the Old Testament.

What does Hannah this godly mother teach us? What would Hannah tell us if we could ask her about her testimony, her story, her walk with God? First, Hannah might say to usBertoldo de Giovanni is a name even the most enthusiastic lover of art is unlikely to recognize.

Michelangelo was only 14 years old when he came to Bertoldo, but it was already obvious that he was enormously gifted. Bertoldo was wise enough to realize that gifted people are often tempted to coast rather than to grow, and therefore he kept trying to pressure his young prodigy to work seriously at his art. One day he came into the studio to find Michelangelo toying with a piece of sculpture far beneath his abilities.

Bertoldo grabbed a hammer, stomped across the room, and smashed the work into tiny pieces, shouting this unforgettable message, "Michelangelo, talent is cheap; dedication is costly! Plato wrote the first sentence of his famous Republic nine different ways before he was satisfied.
